VCU GLOBE
Globally centered living learning community
Welcome to my VCU Globe portfolio!

From volunteering at Cultural Ambassadors to teaching elementary students English, I’ve had the opportunity to not only help my community but exemplify what it means to be a global citizen. This experience taught me the valuable lesson of community engagement. I'm amazed by the conversations and memories I made along the way. By understanding and listening to a range of experiences, it helped me practice intercultural competence.
I consider myself fortunate for being a part of the VCU Globe family. I enjoyed attending class seminars and listening to what the community has to say about international and local issues. In the future, I plan to take the skills I learned from this living-learning community to the field of Public Relations.
EXPERIENCES & VOLUNTEER
October 2018 - May 2019
ESL VOLUNTEER
I worked with Theresa Dinh on a proposal for Miles Jones Elementary School. We worked specifically in the ESL program, I taught children from kindergarten to second grade. We teamed up for this proposal due to the fact that there was a common problem with the students in the Richmond community. A large percentage of children can only afford to eat once a day because the school provides free lunch to low-income students. After hearing this heart-breaking fact, we wanted to find a way to help students and their families financially through a raffle fundraiser.

GHANA GLOBAL CAFE
I attended a global cafe in the main kitchen of West Grace North. This was by far my favorite global cafe because I learned and celebrated Ghana's culture. In addition, I had the opportunity to taste their mouth-watering cuisines.
I filmed a short promotional video to showcase this cafe through social media. Check out the video to see a glimpse of Ghana's global cafe.

BLACKFACE PANEL DISCUSSION
For one of Globe's co-curricular, I attended the Blackface panel discussion after the racist photo of Gov. Northam surfaced. They discussed the importance of press calling out on racism acts. This discussion contributed to my realization that there needs to be more inclusivity and diversity in all work fields. Therefore, news organizations will have a wide-set perspective on all issues.

REFLECTION AFTERÂ MY SECOND SEMESTER AT VCU GLOBE
It is vital to reflect and process the knowledge I have gained after months of being a part of this warm-hearted community. For one of my class assignments, I had to write a reflection for my time at VCU Globe. I wrote about my experience at Cultural Ambassadors and dinner with Shimane students from Japan!

LEADERSHIP IN ACTION POWERPOINT VIDEO PRESENTATION
I created a 5-minute presentation on leadership skills by observing Judge Henry Hudson and how he carried the court case. In US VS. Rojas, the case dealt with the issua re-entered illegal alien. While watching this court case, I learned that being a leader and picking a decision is a difficult task, especially when it involves the removal of an illegal alien.
